Useful CCTV evidence depends on more than resolution. The most important factors are whether the subject is large enough in the frame, the scene is properly lit, the camera angle is suitable, timestamps are accurate and recordings are actually being stored.

1. Make faces large enough in the frame

A camera can be technically high-resolution but still fail to identify a face if the person occupies only a tiny part of a wide scene. Entrance cameras should be framed around where people actually pass.

2. Avoid mounting every camera too high

3. Control backlight and glare

Bright doors, windows, headlights and reflective surfaces can wash out subjects. Test the real scene at the times when incidents are most likely.

4. Plan vehicle views separately

Vehicle identification may require different angles and shutter/lighting conditions from general perimeter monitoring. A wide parking overview is not the same as a gate identification view. 5. Keep date and time accurate

Incorrect timestamps can make investigation harder. Verify time zone, date and clock settings after installation, power interruptions or recorder resets.

6. Test playback, not only live view

A live image does not prove that recordings are being stored. Regularly open playback and confirm recent dates, continuity and camera channels.

7. Keep lenses and enclosures clean

Dust, water marks and spider webs can destroy night image quality. Cleaning is a simple maintenance task with a large effect on usable footage.

8. Store enough history
